A research degree at the University of Hertfordshire is an internationally recognised qualification that demonstrates a high level of research achievement. It enables candidates to develop extensive subject expertise and independent research skills over an extended period, depending on the award.

Candidates undertake a substantial, original research project under the guidance of two or more academic supervisors. The supervisory team supports the development of the research topic and provides guidance throughout the research process. Candidates can also attend sessions through the Researcher Development Programme to strengthen skills relevant to their field.

Assessment is based solely on the final research output: a substantial written submission that candidates must defend in a viva. During their studies, candidates may also have opportunities to present their work at major conferences and publish in peer-reviewed research publications.

Applicants to the University of Hertfordshire’s PhD programme are expected to have a clearly developed area of research focus. Relevant experience or an established record in the proposed field is recommended. Admission decisions are based principally on the quality of the research proposal, the applicant’s suitability for advanced research, and the university’s capacity to supervise the proposed topic. Applicants submit a written research proposal and personal statement to the Doctoral College, and an informal discussion before applying is strongly encouraged.

The PhD is a research degree rather than a taught course. Candidates are expected to take an active role in their learning and development by making use of opportunities provided by the university, with supervisors offering support throughout the programme.

The programme can be completed full-time or part-time. Flexible supervision and a supportive research environment are intended to help candidates make effective use of their research time. Supervisory teams bring both subject expertise and experience in doctoral supervision.
