Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - Economics (4-year)

专业介绍

The PhD in Economics at Cardiff Business School offers students the opportunity to undertake advanced research within a leading Russell Group university and a Public Value-focused academic environment. The programme is designed for highly motivated individuals seeking to contribute to academic knowledge while addressing complex economic challenges with real-world impact. It prepares graduates for careers in academia, public policy, and global economic analysis by fostering critical thinking, theoretical expertise, and strong quantitative skills.

Students benefit from close supervision by experienced academic researchers, working collaboratively to develop their research from its initial stages through to the completion and defence of an original doctoral thesis. The programme emphasises rigorous training and independent inquiry, enabling students to make meaningful contributions to their chosen field of economics.

A key feature of the programme is its vibrant and collaborative research culture. Students are expected to actively participate in regular internal research workshops, where they can present their work, receive feedback, and refine their ideas. In addition, a weekly external seminar series provides opportunities to engage with leading economists from the UK and around the world, supporting intellectual development and global academic engagement.

Applicants who are unable to demonstrate prior comprehensive research training will be admitted to the 4-year PhD programme in Economics and will undertake a year of dedicated research training, followed by three years focused on the research phase of their PhD. Progression to the research phase will not be automatic; it will be contingent on the successful completion of this initial research training.
