专业介绍

Philosophy has been a fundamental aspect of Western intellectual life for over 2,500 years. It plays a central role in the way The University of Edinburgh comprehend the world and university position within it.

The discipline of philosophy equips us with the necessary tools to systematically and critically analyze the underlying assumptions of all intellectual and practical pursuits. While philosophers may adopt different methodologies, the hallmark of philosophy lies in its emphasis on:

• Constructing logical arguments
• Engaging in rigorous inquiry
• Employing sound reasoning
• Communicating ideas with clarity, including the ability to make relevant distinctions

By studying philosophy, individuals develop essential skills in critical thinking, analysis, language, and creativity. These skills enable them to closely examine and discuss various forms of literature, such as poetry, drama, and prose. Students will encounter a diverse range of texts and explore different approaches to reading. Additionally, they will delve into the cultural contexts that have shaped Scottish literature throughout its major periods, spanning from the late Middle Ages to the present.
