专业介绍
The International Hospitality Management programme at Derby offers a foundation year as part of the four-year study pathway, providing students with an opportunity to strengthen skills, knowledge, and confidence before progressing to stage one of the honours degree. This foundation year also supports those considering a career change by introducing aspects of new subject areas. Degrees with a foundation year are continuous, eliminating the need for a separate application upon successful completion of the first year.
The programme equips students with the knowledge and skills to manage hospitality venues while developing leadership and entrepreneurial capabilities essential for success in the hospitality industry, a sector undergoing reshaping and rebuilding after the Covid-19 pandemic. It emphasizes the interplay between hospitality, tourism, and events within the wider 'visitor economy,' encouraging collaboration with Events and Tourism students to broaden career prospects. The curriculum includes the option to study abroad for a semester in stage two and take a placement year before stage three.
Part of the Centre for Contemporary Hospitality and Tourism, accredited as an International Centre of Excellence (ICE) in Tourism and Hospitality, the course aligns all modules with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, promoting awareness of the social and environmental impacts of hospitality alongside its economic benefits.
The BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management degree provides the management and operational skills required to succeed in the hospitality industry of the 2020s and beyond. The curriculum has been updated to include business management, new technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainability, ensuring graduates become adaptable, creative thinkers capable of leading change. Modules integrate core business disciplines such as Finance, Marketing, and HR throughout the course, applying them in contexts where they are most relevant. Students develop financial knowledge through business planning and HR and leadership skills through organizational transformation projects.
The programme shares key modules with International Tourism Management and Event Management degrees, offering insight into the wider 'visitor economy.' While maintaining a hospitality focus, students also develop broader business management knowledge and may select optional modules in event management and tourism, resulting in a wider skillset and greater career flexibility.
Students gain expertise across modern hospitality management and business management skills, including problem-solving, creating innovative hospitality concepts and experiences, project planning and evaluation, and the application of digital technology. Topics covered include hotel operations, luxury hotels and resorts, revenue management, emerging technology such as AR and VR, and sustainable hospitality based on circular economy principles. Optional modules cover hotel data analytics, menu design and sensory evaluation, talent management, and consumer behaviour. Key transferable skills include research, data analysis, business development, finance management, and team leadership, alongside knowledge of industry-standard hospitality software.
Practical experience is integrated throughout the course through tasks and activities reflecting real hospitality management challenges, such as designing customer experiences, researching trends, producing promotional content, menu development, and pitching business proposals. Employers also set real-world challenges, providing opportunities for industry engagement and networking.
The programme encourages and supports work placements and internships both domestically and internationally. Stage two includes a mandatory 30-hour work experience, while an optional placement year or summer internship may be undertaken between stages two and three. Strong links with major international employers, including Ennismore, Marriott, Best Western, Conrad Hilton, The Royal Lancaster, Loews Hotels and Resorts, Old Edwards, and various country clubs in the US, as well as UK establishments such as Skibo Castle and Royal Dornach, provide valuable opportunities for professional development and career advancement.
