The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies (Top-Up) is designed for those seeking to make a genuine and lasting difference to children’s lives and provides a strong foundation for essential roles in health, education and social care. The programme explores how children learn and develop from birth to eight years, developing the professional knowledge and skills required to meet their needs. Opportunities are available to focus on modules aligned with personal interests and career aspirations, subject to demand, and learning is supported by a multidisciplinary academic team to ensure teaching is current, relevant and research-informed. Students who successfully complete the course and meet the entry requirements for PGCE Primary are guaranteed an interview for progression.

This degree offers a valuable route into one of the most rewarding professional sectors, supporting children to reach key developmental milestones and develop skills that last a lifetime. It also enables practitioner recognition for those who do not already hold a relevant practical qualification. To achieve level 3 or level 6 practitioner status, GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above are required; funded options are available to complete these alongside undergraduate study where necessary.

The programme is contemporary and professionally relevant and is included on the Department for Education’s qualifications list for settings delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage. Several routes are available within the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies. The academic-only route leads to the award of BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies on completion of Stage 3 (360 credits), with no full and relevant practitioner status, although Level 5 work experience within the Developing Employability module supports employability development. An alternative route leads to the award of BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies with Practitioner Options on completion of Stage 3 (360 credits), incorporating level 3 practitioner status through assessed work placement. A further route leads to the award of BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies with Graduate Practitioner Competencies (360 credits), incorporating the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies recognised by government.
