The Computer Science with Study Abroad MSci degree enables students to combine analytical knowledge and technical skills as they research and develop software solutions to real-world problems. The study abroad year will allow students to enhance their learning, develop their confidence and immerse themselves in a new culture.

That’s why the MSci Computer Science with Study Abroad degree offers a balance of general computer science with practical software engineering and the opportunity to challenge themselves and live and learn in another country. The course also allows students to tailor the degree to suit their interests and career goals so that they leave prepared for a career in industry or research.

The flexible five-year Computer Science with Study Abroad MSci degree is structured to provide students with a thorough understanding of a wide range of computational systems to ensure they are equipped to meet the challenges of the individual and group projects – as well as a life and career beyond university.

The transition to University level learning can be difficult and that is why in the first and second year, the University of Birmingham ensures students study the key components of computer science to make sure they have a firm foundation in the principles of algorithms, AI, software engineering and relevant maths. From as early as the first year, students will be given the chance to pursue their own interests and most importantly shape their degree to suit your future career aspirations.

The University of Birmingham is committed to ensuring students develop key skills needed to boost thei future prospects. That’s why in the second year, students will work in a team to produce software and also learn new styles of programming in Java, a language widely used in business and industry. The third year will enable students to choose from a wide range of modules including Intelligent Robotics and Human-Computer Interaction.

Students will spend the fourth year studying at one of the University of Birmingham's partner institutes. The year abroad, whilst allowing students an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture, will also help students stand out in future applications by developing their confidence and ability to adapt in unfamiliar surroundings.

The final year sees students return to Birmingham and enables them to tailor the degree to suit their interests with a wide range of specialist modules from the Masters programmes to choose from and an individual project, either developed from their own idea or from a wide selection offered by staff members.
