The MArts (Hons) Creative Expressive Arts and Health Practice programme focuses on developing advanced skills in the applied arts for roles as Arts & Health Practitioners. It equips students with professional and personal skills for careers across arts, health, social care, and educational settings, while providing practical experience through work-based learning and placements with community partner organisations.

The course supports the development of both specific and transferable skills relevant to a wide range of contexts where engagement with people through the arts is central, whether in professional employment or further study. Teaching is delivered by experienced practitioners and researchers, alongside community partners who provide real-world experience and enhance employability.

As an integrated master’s programme, students progress towards autonomous professional practice through an individual extended scholarship and a challenging in-depth project in the community, supported by academic tutorials. Independent work is underpinned by in-depth exploration of research methodologies and the application of research skills in diverse arts and health practice contexts. The programme also develops capabilities in applying creative approaches in coaching, mentoring, facilitating, and engaging in reflective practice.

Opportunities are provided to develop and express skills in chosen art forms through specialist studio sessions, performances, and exhibition work. Playful exploration across art forms empowers the application of creative practices as tools to promote physical and emotional wellbeing. The course examines how arts and creativity can be applied therapeutically in community, voluntary, health, educational, and corporate contexts, considering therapeutic principles, historical and cultural perspectives on health and illness, and the role of the arts in achieving personal and community goals.
