The IS1 program is the equivalent of the first year of a four-year Scottish undergraduate degree. This program is designed to help students develop their academic knowledge and skills within their subject area. Participants will also focus on improving their English academic literacy in preparation for continuing onto their chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Students will study the IS1 across two or three terms, depending on their entry qualifications. After successful completion, they will progress directly to Year 2 of their chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Microbiology with a year in industry

Microbiology focuses on the biology of microorganisms that can be unicellular, multicellular, or acellular (without cells). This includes microbes such as bacteria and fungi, and covers concepts like growth and regulation, as well as how microbes interact with each other and their environments.

The program also examines how microorganisms work collectively to maximize their success and how they can be manipulated to improve health.

The degree begins with a broad-based curriculum, where students will study a wide range of life sciences topics at Levels 1 and 2. They will then concentrate more on key aspects of microbiology at Levels 3 and 4.

In the first two years of study, students will explore core concepts including genetics, cell biology, biological organization, molecular mechanisms, and processes. They will develop practical skills such as laboratory techniques, data analysis, and experiment design, preparing them for designing and conducting projects later in the course.

The course curriculum is shaped by the work of world-leading researchers to ensure that students are learning the latest advances while gaining a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the field. Throughout the course, students can select modules that interest them and may also transfer to one of the other courses if they choose the relevant modules.
