The IS1 program is the equivalent of the first year of a four-year Scottish undergraduate degree. This program is designed to help students develop their academic knowledge and skills within their subject area. Participants will also focus on improving their English academic literacy in preparation for continuing onto their chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Students will study the IS1 across two or three terms, depending on their entry qualifications. After successful completion, they will progress directly to Year 2 of their chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Biological Sciences - Bioinformatics

The course begins with a broad-based curriculum at Levels 1 and 2, allowing students to combine a wide range of topics before specializing in areas of interest at Levels 3 and 4.

In any aspect of life sciences, it is important for students to understand key theories of biology, from the molecular level up to complete body systems and beyond. During the first two years of study, students will explore core concepts such as genetics, cell biology, biological organization, and molecular mechanisms and processes.

Students will develop their practical skills, which include laboratory techniques, data analysis, and the design and execution of experiments. This preparation will enable them to carry out projects later in the course.

They can choose modules that interest them and graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences, or opt for a pathway—Bioinformatics or Plant Sciences—to have these specializations added to their degree title. The flexibility of the courses also allows them to transfer to a different life sciences degree if they select the relevant modules.
