Communication sciences and disorders majors get the pre-professional training that leads them to careers that help those with speech and language differences and disorders. Students will learn how language and speech develop, how to identify and treat differences, delays and disorders in speech and language. The classes focus on basic communication and normal development of communication. They will learn when clinical intervention is necessary and spend a semester working in a professional clinic on campus.

The undergraduate degrees in Communication Disorders are offered at a pre-professional level to prepare students to pursue their interests in the profession of speech-language pathology. State Departments of Education and of Health as well as the national professional organization have established credentials governing the practice of speech language pathology. The master's degree is the minimum entry level credential for the independent practice of speech-language pathology in any employment setting. Students on the B.S. degree program should take the national Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in order to enroll in upper-division classes offered through the College of Education and be admitted to teacher education.

The program also offers:

• Professional experience in the on-campus Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic that diagnoses and treats more than 75 clients a semester.
• Opportunity to learn from and work with nationally certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
• Faculty who are active in professional and service organizations.
• Activities that increase awareness of and advocate for people with communication differences and disorders.
• This discipline is also available as a minor to complement other majors.
