International Incorporated Bachelors (IIB) - Stage One - Bachelor of Science - Biomedical Sciences, students combine a range of topics from across the field at Levels 1 and 2 before specialising in areas that reflect their interests at Levels 3 and 4. The course covers both normal and diseased functions of the human body, as well as approaches to disease prevention and treatment.

As with all areas of the life sciences, it is essential for students to understand key biological theories, from molecular mechanisms to the operation of complete body systems and beyond. During the first two years of study, students explore core concepts such as genetics, cell biology, biological organisation, molecular mechanisms, and biological processes. They also develop key practical skills, including laboratory techniques, data analysis, and experimental design, which prepare them for independent research projects in later years.

Students may select modules that align with their interests, leading to a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences degree, or choose to focus on a specialist pathway in neuroscience, pharmacology, or physiology. The flexibility of the programme also allows students to transfer to a different life sciences degree, provided they have completed the relevant modules.

The curriculum is shaped by the research of the university’s world-leading scientists, ensuring that students gain insight into the latest advances alongside a strong understanding of the fundamental principles of the discipline. Laboratory sessions throughout the programme integrate theoretical and practical learning and support the development of valuable transferable skills that are applicable both within and beyond the laboratory environment.
