The IS1 program is the equivalent of the first year of a four-year Scottish undergraduate degree. This program is designed to help students develop their academic knowledge and skills within their subject area. Participants will also focus on improving their English academic literacy in preparation for continuing onto their chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Students will study the IS1 across two or three terms, depending on their entry qualifications. After successful completion, they will progress directly to Year 2 of their chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Biomedical Sciences with a year in industry

In Biomedical Sciences, students can combine a range of topics from the field at Levels 1 and 2 before specializing in areas of interest at Levels 3 and 4. This study will include the examination of both normal and diseased functions, as well as methods for preventing and treating diseases.

In any aspect of life sciences, it is crucial for students to understand key theories of biology, from the molecular level up to complete body systems and beyond.

During the first two years, students will cover core concepts including genetics, cell biology, biological organization, molecular mechanisms, and processes. They will develop practical skills, such as laboratory techniques, data analysis, and learn how to design and conduct experiments. This preparation will enable them to undertake projects later in their course.

Students have the option to select modules that interest them and can graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences, or they can focus on specific areas such as neuroscience, pharmacology, or physiology. The flexibility of the courses also allows students to transfer to a different life sciences degree if they choose the relevant modules.

The course curriculum is shaped by the work of world-leading researchers to ensure that students are learning the latest advances while also gaining an understanding of the fundamentals of the field. Lab sessions help integrate their knowledge and practical skills, fostering strong transferable skills both in and out of the laboratory.
