This two-semester International Year One pathway is designed for international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree in Computer Science but require additional academic and English-language preparation before progressing to the degree programme at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

The pathway combines introductory university-level computing modules with academic skills development and English-language support. Students build foundational knowledge in programming, computer systems, databases, mathematics, data analysis, and computational problem-solving while adapting to the expectations of undergraduate study in the UK.

Practical, hands-on experience is incorporated into the modules wherever possible. Teaching is informed by research undertaken within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, giving students insight into current developments in computing and the principles underlying modern computer systems.

After successfully completing the pathway and meeting all progression requirements, students can transfer to the BSc (Hons) Computer Science program. The degree develops the technical, analytical, and professional skills needed to design software, solve complex computing problems, and create technology-based solutions.

The department maintains extensive links with industry and regularly welcomes guest speakers from the technology sector. Students may have the opportunity to undertake a paid industrial placement year during their degree, enabling them to apply their knowledge in a professional environment and strengthen their graduate employment prospects.

The department has links with organizations such as Microsoft, Barclays, Experian, GlaxoSmithKline, Sony, and IBM, as well as local software and IT businesses. Support is available to help students identify and apply for suitable placement opportunities.

Students have access to industry-standard facilities, including nine specialist teaching laboratories with more than 400 workstations equipped with current software and specialist applications. The Byrom Street complex at LJMU’s City Campus also provides access to high-performance computers, PC/Linux workstations, networked multimedia computers, and a campus computing cluster.

A dedicated Cyber Security laboratory with a private internal network supports controlled experiments in areas such as malware analysis and ethical hacking.
