This two-semester International Year One pathway is designed for international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence but require additional academic and English-language preparation before progressing to the degree programme at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

The pathway combines introductory university-level computing modules with academic skills development and English-language support. Students develop foundational knowledge in programming, computer systems, databases, mathematics, data analysis, and computational problem-solving while adjusting to the expectations of undergraduate study in the UK.

Practical, hands-on experience is incorporated into the programme wherever possible. Teaching is informed by research conducted within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, enabling students to explore current developments in computing and the principles underlying intelligent systems.

After successfully completing the pathway and meeting all progression requirements, students can transfer to the BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence program. The degree develops the technical, analytical, and professional skills required to design software solutions and apply artificial intelligence methods to real-world problems.

The department maintains extensive links with the technology industry and regularly welcomes guest speakers from relevant organisations. Students may have the opportunity to undertake a paid industrial placement year during their degree, enabling them to apply their knowledge in a professional setting and enhance their graduate employment prospects.

The department has links with global organizations such as Microsoft, Barclays, Experian, GlaxoSmithKline, Sony, and IBM, as well as local software and IT businesses. Students receive support in identifying and applying for suitable placement opportunities.

Students have access to industry-standard facilities, including nine specialist teaching laboratories with more than 400 workstations equipped with current software and specialist applications. The Byrom Street complex at LJMU’s City Campus also provides high-performance computers, PC/Linux workstations, networked multimedia computers, and a campus computing cluster.

These facilities support practical work in programming, software development, data analysis, machine learning, and other areas of computer science and artificial intelligence.
