This two-semester International Year One pathway is designed for international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree in Cyber Security but require additional academic and English-language preparation before progressing to the degree programme at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

The pathway combines introductory university-level computing modules with academic skills development and English-language support. Students build foundational knowledge in programming, computer systems, networks, databases, mathematics, and problem-solving while adapting to the expectations of undergraduate study in the UK.

Practical, hands-on experience is incorporated into the programme wherever possible. Teaching is informed by research conducted within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, allowing students to explore current developments in computing and the principles underlying modern digital systems.

Upon successfully completing the pathway and meeting all progression requirements, students can transfer to the BSc (Hons) Cyber Security program. The degree develops the technical and professional skills required to identify cyber threats, assess vulnerabilities, protect computer systems and networks, and respond to security incidents.

The department maintains extensive links with industry and regularly hosts guest speakers from the technology sector. Students may have the opportunity to undertake a paid industrial placement year during their degree, allowing them to apply their knowledge in a professional environment and enhance their graduate employment prospects.

The department has links with global organizations such as Microsoft, Barclays, Experian, GlaxoSmithKline, Sony, and IBM, as well as local software, cybersecurity, and IT businesses. Support is available to help students identify and apply for suitable placement opportunities.

Students have access to industry-standard facilities, including nine specialist teaching laboratories with more than 400 workstations equipped with current software and specialist applications.

A dedicated Cyber Security laboratory with a private internal network enables students to conduct controlled experiments, examine how malware operates, and develop practical ethical-hacking skills in a secure virtual environment. Students also have access to high-performance computers, PC/Linux workstations, networked multimedia computers, and a campus computing cluster.
