This two-semester International Year One pathway is designed for international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree in Software Engineering but require additional academic and English-language preparation before progressing to the degree programme at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

The pathway combines introductory university-level computing modules with academic skills development and English-language support. Students develop foundational knowledge in programming, software development, computer systems, databases, mathematics, and problem-solving while adapting to the expectations of undergraduate study in the UK.

Practical, hands-on learning is incorporated into the modules wherever possible. Teaching is informed by research conducted within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, allowing students to learn about current developments in computing and the principles behind modern software systems.

Upon successfully completing the pathway and meeting all progression requirements, students can transfer to the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering programme. The department maintains extensive links with industry and regularly hosts guest speakers from the technology sector. Students may have the opportunity to complete a paid industrial placement year during their degree, allowing them to apply their skills in a professional setting and strengthen their graduate employment prospects.

Students have access to industry-standard facilities, including nine specialist teaching laboratories with more than 400 workstations equipped with current software and specialist applications. LJMU’s Byrom Street complex also provides access to high-performance computers, PC/Linux workstations, networked multimedia computers, and a computing cluster.

A dedicated Cyber Security laboratory with a private internal network allows students to conduct controlled experiments and gain practical experience in areas such as malware analysis and ethical hacking.
