专业介绍

The future-focused International Relations and Politics curriculum at Derby encourages students to develop an interdisciplinary and problem-solving approach to global challenges by exploring the interconnections between world history, current affairs, and contemporary policy issues affecting global leaders, from the climate crisis to the digital transition. The programme focuses on contemporary policy issues at both national and international levels, covering topics such as environmental politics, international security, activism and protest movements, the history and politics of China and India, and digital journalism. It offers students the opportunity to study a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches, including political and international relations theory, qualitative and quantitative methods, historical methods, communication and media studies techniques, and journalistic methods. The curriculum also includes employability-focused modules that enable students to develop problem-focused solutions for a variety of societal stakeholders, including businesses, governments, NGOs, and charities, alongside global study abroad opportunities at partner universities in Europe, the United States, and Asia.

The programme takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of world affairs and global issues, integrating politics, history, journalism, and communication studies to provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of significant global challenges. Embedding the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the curriculum emphasizes sustainability and sustainable development, with core areas in environmental politics, equality and political activism, and non-traditional approaches to peace and international security. The programme equips students with a profound understanding of dynamic processes and trends affecting human societies, political systems, and the planet, cultivating critical faculties needed to navigate and influence complex global problems. Through the exploration of ever-changing political and international systems, students develop attributes such as open-mindedness, curiosity, adaptability, and resilience, which are highly valued by employers.

Students engage with current events weekly, analyzing political, technological, economic, and social developments. The programme incorporates meaningful learning and assessment opportunities, including portfolios, policy briefs, data analysis, and employability-focused modules, fostering competencies in influencing political and social agendas, negotiating, and effectively communicating research findings. The curriculum spans diverse subjects, including politics, international relations, anthropology, cultural studies, economics, data science, sociology, geography, history, languages, international development, philosophy, marketing, and media. Key topics include political activism, contested cultures and norms, governance, global challenges, power structures, democratic consent, environmental politics, climate change, inequalities of gender, race, and resources, decolonisation, international security and conflict, globalisation, and civil liberties. Certain modules are designed with flexibility, allowing content to adapt in real time to emerging themes, crises, and political and social processes. The programme also provides foundational knowledge in data science to critically evaluate claims made by politicians and organisations in a statistics-driven society.

The programme is globally oriented, welcoming students from around the world and maintaining links with multiple overseas universities. Through the university’s Global Opportunities initiative, students can study abroad to gain new perspectives, build confidence, and develop independence and communication skills. Community engagement projects provide opportunities to support diverse social groups locally.

Students are given opportunities to tackle real-world problems and present solutions to external audiences. In the second year, employability-focused modules involve collaborative projects with organisations or companies that recommend or implement change. In the third year, students undertake independent research projects on specific policy issues, developing expertise in particular policy areas and presenting findings at conferences. Previous students have presented on challenges faced by local charities and businesses, including Toyota UK and Community Action Derby, particularly in implementing corporate social responsibility principles in practice.
