Program Description

Students can split their degree between the study of Spanish language and cultures and another subject of their choice. Studying Hispanic Studies at 50% will enable students to become highly proficient in writing, reading, speaking and listening to Spanish with the option of studying a second Iberian language (Basque, Catalan or Portuguese) from Year Two. Students will spend one year in a Spanish-speaking country (or if relevant, Basque or Catalan speaking region or Portuguese speaking country) as an assistant in a school, as a student at a university or on a work placement.

In the Ancient History programme students can combine a study of the social, political, and cultural history of Ancient Greece and Rome equally with another subject. Students will have the chance to study a wide range of periods and themes in social and cultural history. In Year One, students develop their knowledge of the main themes and events in Greek and Roman history, and the skills required to assess them. Year Two broadens their knowledge and improves the skills students have acquired. Students will study ancient texts and reflect on the nature of history. Year Three modules centre on key figures and themes reflecting the research interests of the Department. Students have the option of writing a dissertation on a research topic of their choice.
