Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Sociology

专业介绍

The BA (Hons) Sociology at the University of Derby allows students to build a personalised study pathway aligned with their career aspirations, focusing on themes such as crime and justice, youth cultures, politics and social justice, security and terrorism, or a combination of these areas. The degree incorporates work placement modules and inspirational fieldtrips to enhance employability and offers opportunities for global learning, including a semester at Charles University in Prague and a final-year study trip.

Students engage critically with topics such as race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, class, celebrity culture, and the spread of conspiracy theories, while real-world research projects enable them to translate theory into practice under the guidance of an enthusiastic and supportive teaching team. Recognised for excellence in research, the teaching team specialises in areas including social policy, childhood and war, extremism and counter-terrorism, conspiracy theories, humour and society, politics and social movements, Marxism, and social theory, regularly publishing findings and presenting at international conferences.

Sociology students also benefit from guest lectures and departmental research seminars delivered by leading professionals and academics, gaining practical skills in research methods, fieldwork, data collection, and statistical analysis. Through independent study modules, students conduct in-depth research on sociological themes of personal interest, developing the ability to apply findings practically, analyse arguments critically, and justify their opinions with confidence. With a strong international focus, the programme encourages students to examine sociological questions affecting communities worldwide, while overseas study and fieldwork experiences provide valuable professional development and demonstrate a global outlook to potential employers.
