A University of Hertfordshire research degree is an internationally recognised qualification that signifies a high level of achievement in research. It enables candidates to develop extensive subject expertise and independent research skills over an extended period, depending on the level of the award.

Candidates undertake a substantial and original research project throughout the duration of the degree, supported by the supervision and guidance of two or more academic staff members. The supervisory team assists with both the selection of the research topic and the conduct of the research. Additional support is provided through postgraduate seminars, which help develop subject-specific knowledge and research skills relevant to the chosen field.

The degree is assessed solely on the final research output, presented as a substantial written thesis that must be defended in a viva voce examination. Throughout the programme, candidates are also given opportunities to present their work at major conferences and to contribute to refereed research publications.
