DMU is the only UK university selected by the United Nations as an Academic Impact Hub for Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This partnership offers MPH students opportunities to engage with globally recognised organisations, including the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

Rather than completing a traditional thesis, students undertake a practicum—an extended project designed to provide practical experience of real-world public health work. Opportunities may be available to work with public health institutions and organisations around the world, making the programme suitable for those who want to create an impact at local and global levels.

The core public health workforce comprises practitioners and specialists. The programme’s curriculum is informed by the syllabus of the internationally recognised Faculty of Public Health Diplomate examination, helping students develop the knowledge and skills required to pursue either pathway. The DFPH examination is not included in the programme, and completion of the MPH does not guarantee success. However, the course provides relevant preparation for graduates who choose to take the examination.

Students benefit from DMU’s links with international organisations, including the United Nations and the World Health Organization. These relationships may support practicum opportunities and hands-on projects that replace the traditional dissertation.

The programme offers opportunities to work with international partners, gain practical experience of local public health systems and learn within a diverse global context.

Each section of the programme is aligned with one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs provide a framework through which students explore key public health concepts and challenges.

Alignment with the Faculty of Public Health Diplomate examination syllabus helps equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop as public health practitioners and specialists.

Teaching is delivered by academics, public health practitioners and specialists, supported by senior guest lecturers who bring current, real-world perspectives to the learning experience.

Full-day sessions enable students to examine real-world public health scenarios and develop practical skills. Innovative teaching approaches also incorporate physical activity and the arts into the classroom.

Alongside the core public health knowledge and competencies associated with the Diplomate examination, the programme develops leadership, collaboration and management capabilities valued in the workplace.

Leicester’s diverse communities provide a distinctive setting in which students can explore health inequalities, address complex public health challenges and develop solutions relevant to one of the UK’s most diverse cities.
