Designed in consultation with industry and business partners, Northumbria University’s highly practical Data Science MSc equips students with the skills required to analyse, synthesise and manage data of different types and sizes efficiently.

The programme enables students to explore valuable data insights and help organisations maximise the potential of their information. Students develop knowledge from structured and unstructured data using a range of analytical methods, processes, algorithms and systems.

Students gain a deeper understanding of Big Data and cloud computing while developing the skills needed to address realistic Big Data challenges. The course covers principal machine-learning methods, advanced database technologies, data-visualisation techniques and statistical approaches. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, students learn to apply modern analytical and statistical techniques to business data. They also develop programming skills in Python and R for effective and efficient statistical analysis.

The course is suitable for applicants with an undergraduate degree in computing, information sciences, mathematics or statistics, particularly where the programme includes applied computing components. It is ideal for graduates seeking to progress towards a career as a data scientist, as well as professionals with considerable computing experience in an industrial or business environment.
