The Master of Architecture (Architecture) at De Montfort University is a professionally focused postgraduate programme designed to develop advanced architectural knowledge, critical thinking, design skills and professional practice. The course responds to contemporary issues in architecture through an enquiry-led approach, encouraging students to tackle complex problems, challenge established conventions and develop independent positions on architectural design. Students explore architecture through historical and philosophical perspectives, contemporary urban conditions, sustainable ecology, modern technologies, legal and economic contexts, and the evolving nature of the profession. The programme combines research-led design studios with specialist areas including thematic and contextual design, humanities, technical realisation, integrated technology, architectural research and design thesis development. Students have opportunities to investigate different architectural contexts and approaches while developing expertise in digital visualisation, fabrication, building performance, materials and environmental systems. The curriculum also includes management, professional practice and law, helping students understand business management, ethics, contracts and the wider responsibilities of architectural practice. A dissertation and Architectural Design Research Study enable students to undertake detailed academic and design investigations into areas of personal interest. Learning takes place through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and dedicated postgraduate studio facilities, supported by academics, practising architects, engineers, urban advisors and technologists. The programme culminates in an advanced Design Thesis or comprehensive design project demonstrating students’ ability to integrate architectural, technical and research knowledge into complex building design. The course is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for Part II exemption, supporting progression towards professional registration as an architect.
