Program Description

If you hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, but don’t meet the entry requirements for a master’s, a Pre-Master’s can help you gain a place on a postgraduate degree. For progression to the 1st year of a postgraduate degree at the University of York. Your course length is determined mainly by your English language level (UKVI IELTS score).

Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If your course is longer than 2 terms, you’ll take additional modules designed to improve one or more of your English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.

Master of Arts - Social Policy

This course will equip students with the skills to analyse social policy in a way that enables them to understand how policies are developed and the role they play in people's lives.

The course offers a combination of taught coursework and supervised independent study. Students will develop the skills required to carry out their own research in an area of social policy that interests them.

This MA is especially suited to applicants if they are considering a career in social policy analysis, advocacy or research in the public sector or socially-focused NGOs. Students will cover topics such as the welfare state in the UK and other countries, the impact of globalisation on social programmes and why patterns of social inequality persist.
