The MSc Project Management is an industry-focused programme designed to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills required to design, implement, and manage complex projects that deliver measurable business value. It is suitable for graduates from any academic discipline and introduces key concepts in project management and strategic management.

Students explore contemporary practices including portfolio and programme management, project governance, and strategic tools for developing sustainable competitive advantage. The programme demonstrates how corporate strategy can be translated into practical projects while developing the leadership capabilities required for effective planning and implementation.

Alongside technical project management expertise, students develop transferable skills in communication, teamwork, negotiation, problem-solving, conflict resolution, presentations, and critical thinking. These capabilities prepare graduates to work effectively across a range of industries and organisational environments.

Throughout the programme, students gain experience using industry-standard tools, artificial intelligence applications, and research databases. They also develop quantitative skills related to cost, quality, and risk management. Optional courses allow students to tailor their studies in areas such as leadership, systems thinking, innovation, operations, strategic change, and diversity management.

The dissertation provides an opportunity to undertake original research in an area aligned with the student’s interests. It enables students to deepen their expertise, generate new insights, and support their ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

Teaching is supported by research-active academics whose work contributes to global sustainability and influences government policy and industry practice. Their expertise forms part of the Centre for Logistics and Sustainability, which supports the transition to net zero and the improvement of operations for major organisations, including Tesco, Coca-Cola, John Lewis, DHL, and Sainsbury’s.

Heriot-Watt University is recognised for its research in logistics and sustainability, including transport benchmarking, environmental impact, and operational reform. Research findings are translated into practical tools and techniques used across industry, ensuring that students engage with current challenges and evidence-based solutions.

Learning is delivered through lectures, tutorials, simulations, guest sessions, and group work. These activities provide opportunities for students to collaborate with peers and academic staff. Students can also join Heriot-Watt’s Business Society to expand their professional networks and gain further career insights.

The programme combines core courses with optional courses, enabling students to focus on the areas of project management most relevant to their career ambitions or specialist interests.

In the final semester, students complete a dissertation demonstrating advanced knowledge of their chosen area through original research.

The programme can be studied full-time, part-time, or through individual courses. Full-time study takes 12 months, while part-time study takes 24 months, with students completing two courses per semester before progressing to the dissertation.
