Finance encompasses a wide range of topics within a vast research field that includes themes such as econometrics, portfolio analysis, and hedging financial risk. Students will explore qualitative and quantitative research methods specifically designed to reflect the field of banking and finance.

The MRes Finance program is tailored for individuals aspiring to pursue a career in research and/or academia. This degree has a strong research focus, complemented by some taught elements that enhance knowledge of the research field. An MRes serves as an ideal first step for those hoping to progress to doctoral studies, such as a PhD.

Participants will deepen their understanding of finance and develop a broader perspective on the evolving roles and perceptions of finance within an ever-changing social context.

Students will learn to utilize the Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab, which provides access to the data and analytical tools commonly found in financial institutions across the City of London and around the world. This experience will equip them with the skills necessary for success in the industry.

MRes Finance explores research and financial theory issues, such as:

• research skills, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches
• theoretical stances underpinning different approaches to research
• how to design a research proposal, including construction of research questions and/or hypotheses
• launching and managing a research project, including data collection, analysis and interpretation
• financial modelling
• finance research techniques using Matlab

The program equips students with the skills and knowledge to appreciate the depth and breadth of management and organizational theories and techniques, enabling them to apply these within a social science context. Students benefit from cutting-edge research conducted by the Finance Group, which specializes in areas such as banking, behavioral and corporate finance, and financial econometrics.

This course is taught at Essex Business School. By embedding the latest academic and industry thinking into the curriculum, students experience an education that is at the forefront of the issues impacting today's financial sector.
