Accounting encompasses a wide range of topics within a vast research field that includes themes such as management accounting, reporting and analysis, and accountable accounting. Students will explore qualitative and quantitative research methods specifically designed to reflect the accounting field.

The MRes Accounting program is intended for individuals who aspire to pursue a career in research and/or academia, as it emphasizes a strong research focus. While there are taught elements that support knowledge of the research field, the program serves as an ideal first step for those hoping to advance to doctoral studies, such as a PhD.

Participants will deepen their understanding of accounting and develop a broader perspective on the evolving roles and perceptions of accounting within an ever-changing social context.

MRes Accounting explores research and accounting theory issues, such as:

• research skills, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches
• theoretical stances underpinning different approaches to research
• how to design a research proposal, including construction of research questions and/or hypotheses
• launching and managing a research project, including data collection, analysis and interpretation
• corporate reporting and analysis
• management accounting

The program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to appreciate the depth and breadth of accounting theories and techniques, applying these within a social science context. Students benefit from cutting-edge research conducted by the Accounting Group, which specializes in accounting, accountability, and global development.
