Master of Arts – Dickens Studies by Research enables students to carry out in-depth research on a specific topic—agreed with their supervisor—in any area of Dickens Studies. Possible areas of focus include Dickens’s novels, short fiction, journalism, plays, and public readings, as well as adaptations of his work for stage and screen. Comparative projects may also explore translations and the writings of his precursors, contemporaries, rivals, imitators, or inheritors.

Research is developed through three Project Preliminaries:

• an extended research proposal,
• an annotated bibliography, and
• a short, research-based case study.

For the case study, students are invited to engage with either the archive holdings of the Charles Dickens Museum or the network of Dickens’s journal collaborators, made accessible through the University’s renowned Dickens Journals Online project.
