Program Description

If you hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, but don’t meet the entry requirements for a master’s, a Pre-Master’s can help you gain a place on a postgraduate degree. For progression to the 1st year of a postgraduate degree at the University of York. Your course length is determined mainly by your English language level (UKVI IELTS score).

Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If your course is longer than 2 terms, you’ll take additional modules designed to improve one or more of your English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.

Master of Arts - Sociolinguistics

Explore the social aspects of language and communication. Consider the roles of society, social class and gender in the context of a speech community. Investigate social motivations for language change.

The University of York's course will provide students with a detailed foundation in the key theories and questions in sociolinguistics, while giving them practical training in the techniques, methodologies, and quantitative analysis methods associated with this field.

Students will analyse the ways in which social factors affect language, and investigate the social, geographical and stylistic differences in spoken language. They'll have the opportunity to develop their interest in areas including language change, language and gender, attitudes to language, language planning, bilingualism and sociophonetics. Students will be able to study contemporary and historical data.

With world-class tutors students will gain up-to-date knowledge of the field, and be introduced to research questions and methodologies. They'll also have the opportunity to conduct original research in sociolinguistics, and apply their skills and knowledge to linguistic data.
