Program Description

If you hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, but don’t meet the entry requirements for a master’s, a Pre-Master’s can help you gain a place on a postgraduate degree. For progression to the 1st year of a postgraduate degree at the University of York. Your course length is determined mainly by your English language level (UKVI IELTS score).

Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If your course is longer than 2 terms, you’ll take additional modules designed to improve one or more of your English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.

Master of Public Administration - Comparative Applied Social and Public Policy, Evaluation and Research

This Masters programme is ideal for mid-career professionals. Students will find the course useful if they work, or intend to work, with policy; either as an adviser, researcher, analyst or consultant.

Students will study a strongly international curriculum that is based around a combination of comparative social and public policy management and advanced research skills training. This course builds directly on the University of York's applied policy research expertise, both in the taught modules which draw heavily on York's own research and in the practice-relevant activity that provides an opportunity to participate in ongoing policy research projects.

The Department of Social Policy and Social Work has one of the largest concentrations of social policy research in the UK. It is home to two specialist research units: the Social Policy Research Unit and the Centre for Housing Policy.
