The MA Creative Writing by Research at the University of Buckingham is a research-led postgraduate programme designed for students who want to develop their creative writing practice while engaging in critical and practice-based research. The programme provides students with the opportunity to focus on an individual creative writing project and explore different forms, genres, styles and perspectives under the guidance of experienced supervisors and creative practitioners. Students may develop projects in areas such as poetry, prose fiction, drama, creative nonfiction or hybrid forms.

Throughout the programme, students work on both creative and critical components. The initial stage involves developing a creative writing portfolio, experimenting with different approaches to writing, preparing a reflective commentary and producing an extended research proposal for the final project. Students then refine and edit their creative work while undertaking research that supports the critical enquiry behind their project. The final submission consists of a substantial creative writing project accompanied by a reflective commentary.
