Master of Arts - Directing

专业介绍

The MA Directing programme at the University of Hertfordshire is designed to develop creative, technical, and leadership skills required for directing film and television. The course focuses on enabling students to shape and realise original screen stories, guiding projects from script development through rehearsal, production, and final edit. Students learn to lead creative vision on set, working closely with actors, cinematographers, and designers, while developing a distinct directorial voice through practical projects that explore storytelling, pacing, tone, and performance.

The programme is delivered within a collaborative postgraduate film production environment that reflects professional industry practice. Students work alongside peers in producing, cinematography, screenwriting, and editing, gaining experience within production structures that mirror those of the UK screen industries. Practical filmmaking is central to the course, supported by research-led teaching, industry engagement, and regular feedback through workshops, supervised projects, and group critique. The course also includes BAFTA albert-accredited training in sustainable production practices and offers opportunities to engage with initiatives such as The Elstree Project.

Structured as a full-time, one-year programme, the course combines lectures, seminars, rehearsals, workshops, tutorials, and independent study, with teaching typically delivered across two days per week. Assessment is entirely coursework-based, allowing students to demonstrate their abilities through practical directing projects, presentations, and reflective work. Early stages focus on developing advanced directing techniques, including working with actors and visual storytelling, while the final stage centres on a major directing project. This culminates in the production of a substantial film that showcases the student’s creative and professional capabilities and contributes to their portfolio for careers in the screen industries.
