Master of Arts - Factual and Documentary

专业介绍

The MA Factual and Documentary programme at the University of Hertfordshire is designed to develop advanced skills in documentary filmmaking, with a particular emphasis on long-form, research-led practice. The course enables students to specialise in factual and documentary film at postgraduate level, focusing on film rather than television production. Students build expertise in key areas including story development, research, ethics, production planning, and post-production workflows, while engaging with project-based learning that reflects current industry standards.

The programme supports the development of an individual creative voice, with a strong focus on storytelling, authorship, and ethical practice. Students learn how to take documentary ideas from initial research through to final screen output, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the creative and practical processes involved. Teaching is informed by contemporary UK and international documentary practice and is delivered by experienced lecturers, alongside contributions from visiting industry professionals through guest lectures, workshops, and masterclasses. Opportunities such as participation in The Elstree Project further enhance engagement with real-world documentary contexts.

Delivered as a full-time, one-year course, the programme combines practical filmmaking with academic research and industry insight. Teaching takes place across two days per week and includes lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, and independent study, with assessment entirely coursework-based. In the early stages, students focus on documentary production techniques, research methods, and ethical considerations, while also collaborating with postgraduate editing students. The course culminates in a major documentary project, where students produce, direct, or lead a department on an original film, resulting in a substantial portfolio piece that reflects professional documentary practice.
